In January of 2013 I was diagnosed with Celiac disease – an evil little autoimmune disorder that causes a number of, what my daughter calls, “tummy troubles”. There’s no cure – and the only thing you can do is to completely and without cheating – adopt a gluten free diet. The first thought that rippled through my mind was “I’ll never have a beer again.”
The second thought was “what am I going to have with my Timmies?”
There is a small, yet growing selection of gluten free beers out there – but this is Inside Timmies – so let’s fast forward to July 2013, when Tim Horton’s introduced the Gluten-Free Coconut Macaroon to their menu. The clouds parted and trumpets were sounded – but would it replace a toasted cinnamon and raisin bagel? Could macaroons substitute for Timbits?
The answer – for this avoider of all things wheat – is yes. If you know any other celiac sufferers, you’ll know the problems associated with cross contamination. Thankfully, Tim Hortons understands this and the macaroons are prepared in a gluten free facility and sealed in their own packaging. You’ll find the Gluten-Free Coconut Macaroons sitting atop the donut display case – almost snubbing their nose at their gluten-laden cousins below. Biting into one of the two macaroons in the package, you’ll find an awesome taste collision of coconut and chocolate – and the macaroons offer enough bites to go well with a medium sized coffee or steeped tea.
As for nutrition – well, listen – if you’re avoiding gluten all the time – you really stop counting calories – but if you must know, two macaroons come in at 250 calories and 14g of fat – so pretty much in line with a bagel. Hmmmm… bagels.
If you’re celiac – or just going gluten free – definitely grab a pack of Gluten-Free Coconut Macaroons – you won’t be disappointed. The cost is $1.29 and comes with two macaroons.
